Something we build
Something we burn
You know, gaps once ruled the earth
Segregation, a geographical norm
But mankind, obsessed with access
And so
Physical, concrete structure
Metaphoric, abstract idea
Cavities and canyons
Holes and hollows
Puzzles solved
Access granted
Platforms for self-imposed deaths
Epicenters of iconic photography
Shelters for the homeless
Homes for nesting birds
Meccas for the extreme
Stunts and wild feats
Enablers of commerce
Boosters of economies
Default targets for stratagems of wartime
Landmark or Seamark?
Sometimes neither
Sometimes both
Without them, where would we be?
Where would we go?
Sure promoters of going
All of these
words and
thoughts are
separate
unconnected
disjointed
If only there were a way
to bring them together
It would be nice
to eliminate the voids
To create a succinct string of thought traffic
How much harder we must work
To navigate, to communicate, to commute
When two things cannot meet with ease
There are of course other ways
With technological and engineering advances
one must wonder how many, if any
missing links remain in the world
We have spanned
traversed
coupled
crossed
attached
joined
tied
undivided
reached
and bound
nearly anything and everything
And yet, shockingly,
We, as a human race
Are not so united
Even with all
these trusses and roads
inventions, suspensions
beams and tracks
Every man remains an island
Something we build
Something we burn
